Exercising Guinea Pigs
Guinea Pigs need regular exercise to stay fit and healthy, and to promote a better well-being for that Guinea Pig.
In this Exercising Guinea Pigs Basic Care Guide, we have information about everything you need to know about exercise and Guinea Pigs, including the benefits of exercising Guinea Pigs, how to exercise Guinea Pigs and much more |
Exercising overviewLike all living animals, Guinea Pigs need plenty of exercise. They love to run around, explore, climb over rocks and bricks, hide, make nests, and play.
You can exercise them indoors in a run, or any blocked off area (make sure you place down newspaper to collect their droppings and wee), and you can exercise them outdoors in a run or large space. Make sure you follow our safety precautions on exercising them, and where you exercise them, so you can ensure they have no way of escaping. Also, we will advise on what type of ground you should place them on, and for how long you should leave them out, and what you should include in the run with them. |
Exercising OutdoorsWhether Guinea Pigs live indoors or outdoors, they still need a bit of fresh air now and then.
If you have an outdoor run, you could place this on the ground (any surface will do. Placing the run over is good because they can eat it, Placing the run over paving is good because it wears down their nails. If you do place the run over grass, ensure there are no buttercups or daisies as these are harmful to Guinea Pigs) Ensure that the run is secure and they can not escape from it. Make sure there is a tight lid, as Guinea Pigs can jump out, or cats and birds could attack them. Leave them outdoors in the run for about an hour at a time, at least four times a week. Do not put them out if it is very cold, dark, or wet. You could place some bricks, or large stones, in the run with them to climb on. You could place some piping in the run for them to explore (Guinea Pigs LOVE to run through pipes) and some herbs (such as mint) as treats |

Exercising IndoorsWhether your Guinea Pigs live indoors or outdoors, exercising indoors is a great idea for many reasons, one being that it is usually warmer indoors than out, and another being that they can be close to you most of the time.
If you have an indoor run, you could place this on the ground (preferably hard floors. If you are using a carpet, you may want to place down lots of newspaper on the floor to absorb and protect your carpet from the Guinea Pigs poop and pee. If the bars are high enough, you don't need a lid Make sure there are no dirt or crumbs on the floor that the Guinea Pig could eat. We have a great Indoor Run listed in the product section to the left, and we recommend this model because it is big enough for the Guinea to run around in, and high enough for it to not be able to jump out. |
