"Is it okay to wash my guinea pig with regular soap?"
Our Guinea Pig Expert received a question from a Guinea Pig owner concerned about washing her Guinea Pigs wanting to know if they can use their normal dove soap on their pet.
It is important to understand that normal shampoo or bathing products designed for humans should not be used on Guinea Pigs or other small pets.
Normal shampoo or soap can cause skin irritations, rashes, dryness and loss of hair. It can also leave a greasy residue in the fur.
If you do decide to bathe your Guinea Pig (they rarely need washing) you should either use specialised small animal shampoo.
If you are not able to access small animal shampoo then baby shampoo is the next best option, however be extra careful to avoid the eyes and ears and ensure that it is all rinsed out.
